Frequently Asked Questions

  1. When will the new bridges be completed?
It is anticipated that all travel lanes will be open by September 2011.  There will still be isolated, “punch list” type items that need attention following the opening of the travel lanes.  Some of this work may require periodic lane restrictions, but for the most part, the bridge will be fully operational by September 2011.

  2. How long, high and wide is the new bridge?
The new bridge consists of two parallel structures, each 5.5 miles long.  Both structures are sixty feet wide and accommodate three 12-foot travel lanes and 12-foot shoulders on either side of the travel lanes.  The new bridge is 21 feet higher than the old Twin Span Bridge, and approximately 30 feet above the water level.  The bridge features an 80 foot high-rise section to provide vertical clearance for marine traffic on Lake Pontchartrain.

  3. What happened to the old bridge?
Workers are taking pieces of concrete, which once made up the old bridges, and placing them into Lake Pontchartrain to create an artificial reef, between the U.S. 11 bridge and the new Twin Span. There are plans to build a second artificial reef closer to the north shore, once crews finish demolishing other portions of the old Twin Span Bridge.

  4. What is the total project cost, and who is funding it?
The total cost for the new Twin Span Bridge is approximately $800 million. The project is being funded by federal tax dollars from the Federal Highway Administration.

  5. Who will be performing the work?
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development is administering the project. Project activities are being coordinated with the Federal Highway Administration. Boh Bros. Construction Co. of New Orleans is building the level portion and the approaches for the new bridge.  The 80 foot high-rise section was constructed by Traylor/Kiewit/Massman Joint Venture.  Volkert Construction Services is providing construction engineering and inspection services in support of the DOTD.

  6. How will traffic be impacted by the construction work for the remainder of the project?  Construction crews are making preparations to open the eastbound approach on the northshore of Lake Pontchartrain in September 2011.  The work will require some temporary daytime lane closures on I-10 which may increase traffic congestion.
Once the eastbound approach on the northshore is opened, traffic will be placed in its final configuration and traffic flow will be restored.
The remainder of the work will take place off the roadway (Interstate 10) so traffic impacts should be minimal until the completion of the project.

  7. How can I stay current on information about construction activities?
You can e-mail questions and comments directly to the construction team at twinspanbridge@volkert.com. You may also contact the DOTD customer service line at 1-877-4LA-DOTD.
